Dairy Management Internship — USA
Hands-on paid training on modern US dairy operations under the J-1 Trainee/Intern program.
Program overview
Work alongside herd managers on 500–5,000 cow operations. You'll rotate through milking parlour operations, nutrition, reproduction, calf care, herd health and precision dairy technology (activity monitors, robotic milking, DHI records). Designed for agriculture graduates who want to build a serious career in dairy production and management.
Eligibility
- Diploma / B.Sc / B.Tech / M.Sc in Agriculture, Dairy, Veterinary or allied sciences
- Age 18–35 with valid passport
- Basic conversational English (no IELTS required)
- Physically fit for farm work — able to lift 20 kg and stand for long shifts
- Genuine interest in a long-term dairy career

- Milking parlour operations and equipment sanitation
- Feeding, ration mixing and TMR management
- Heat detection, AI records and repro-program support
- Calf feeding, weaning and vaccination schedules

- Data entry into DairyComp / PCDART / DelPro herd software

Salary
Most host farms pay USD 12–16/hour with overtime after 40 hours. Monthly gross typically USD 2,200–3,000 depending on farm, state and hours. Housing is provided or subsidised on almost every placement.
Accommodation
Private or shared room in farm-owned housing, usually within walking distance of the barn. Utilities and Wi-Fi almost always included. Some placements provide a farm vehicle.
Work Schedule
Typical 5–6 day work week, 40–48 hours + paid overtime. Split shifts around milking are common on dairy farms. You get one full day off per week for personal time.

Do I need IELTS for the J-1 visa?
No. English is assessed through a live interview conducted by the US sponsor. IELTS is not required.
Is the salary really paid in USD?
Yes. You are paid legally by the US host farm in USD, taxes deducted per federal rules, direct-deposit to a US bank account you open on arrival.
Can I extend beyond 18 months?
The J-1 Trainee category caps at 18 months. Many alumni later transition to F-1 (master's) or H-2A work programs — we advise on the right path individually.
